What we fix

Four things go wrong with built-in refrigeration

Almost every call on the island is one of these. If what your unit is doing appears below, it is a known failure with a known route to a fix.

  1. Hands holding an evaporator fan assembly at the open back wall of a refrigerator interior with glass shelves

    Refrigerator Repair

Built-in and integrated Sub-Zero refrigerator diagnostics — dual-compressor cooling faults, defrost circuits, condensers and control boards, worked on in the cabinet.

    What people call about

    • Fresh-food side has crept into the high 40s while the freezer is still rock solid
    • Compressor runs almost constantly and the base grille is pushing out warm air
    • Service light or "vacuum condenser" message keeps coming back after cleaning
    • Water collecting under the crisper drawers and freezing into a sheet
See how this one is diagnosed
  2. Multimeter probe reaching into the open service bay beneath a stainless undercounter drawer unit in a wood kitchen

    Freezer Repair

Freezer drawers and columns that have lost their hold — soft ice cream, frost sheets, failed defrost heaters and alarms that will not clear.

    What people call about

    • Ice cream has gone soft even though everything else still looks frozen
    • Frost sheet building across the back wall and along the drawer slides
    • High-temperature alarm sounding overnight and clearing again by morning
    • Drawer gasket has stiffened and the door no longer pulls itself shut
See how this one is diagnosed
  3. Hands lifting a full ice bin out of an undercounter ice machine, screwdriver, pliers and wrench on the mat alongside

    Ice Maker Repair

Clear-ice and standard Sub-Zero ice makers — short fills, hollow cubes, stalled harvests and supply restrictions traced back to the source.

    What people call about

    • Cubes come out hollow, undersized or cloudy compared with a year ago
    • Ice tastes and smells of whatever else is in the refrigerator
    • Production stopped entirely a few days after a water filter change
    • Bin has fused into one solid block that has to be chipped apart
See how this one is diagnosed
  4. Hands fitting a new door gasket to a glass-door wine cabinet stacked with bottles on wooden racks

    Wine Cooler Repair

Dual-zone wine storage that will not hold a setpoint — drifting zones, condensation on the glass, noisy evaporator fans and dead zone sensors.

    What people call about

    • Upper zone sits three or four degrees above where it is set
    • Condensation forming on the inside of the glass door in warm weather
    • Fan noise that rises and falls at random through the evening
    • Display shows a zone error and both compartments drift together

The shop

Built around one brand, on one island

“A Sub-Zero is a twenty-year appliance in a five-year world. Most of what comes in as a dead unit is a fan, a sensor or a defrost fault.”

Driftwood is a small independent shop working Bainbridge Island and nothing else. That narrowness is deliberate: seeing the same handful of model families week after week is what turns a two-hour diagnostic into a twenty-minute one, and what makes it possible to carry the right part on the van instead of booking a second crossing.

  • Sealed systems, not swap-outs

Gauges on the system before anything is quoted. A compressor gets replaced when the readings say so, not because it is the easiest line on an invoice.

  • Cabinetry treated as cabinetry

Panel-ready columns and integrated units come out on blankets and go back square. The kitchen looks the same when we leave as it did when we arrived.

  • One island, no subcontractors

The person who takes the call is the person who does the work. Nothing gets handed to a rotating crew that has never seen your unit before.

More about how we work

How a call runs

From the phone to back in spec

Five steps, in this order, every time. Nothing here is a surprise on the day and nothing gets decided without you.

  1. Tell us what it is doing

The model number off the frame inside the fresh-food door, and a plain description of the behaviour. That combination usually narrows the fault before anyone leaves the shop.

  2. We plan the crossing

Island calls are batched by district and booked against the sailing schedule. You get a two-hour window, not a vague day-long promise.

  3. A real diagnostic

Temperatures logged over a full cycle, the sealed system read under gauges, defrost circuit and controls tested. You get the cause, not a guess dressed up as one.

  4. Priced, then repaired

A firm number for parts and labour before a single screw comes out. Nothing is ordered or opened until you say go ahead.

  5. Run back down to spec

We do not leave on a promise. The unit is brought back to temperature while we are there and the readings are shown to you before the van moves.

What the callbacks sound like

5.0 / 5781 reviews

  • We are up a long gravel drive and most trades will not commit to a time. We got a two-hour window and the van arrived inside it. Compressor relay, swapped on the spot.

  • The wine unit had drifted four degrees between zones for a year. It turned out to be a zone sensor, not the compressor two other people had quoted for. Straightforward, and honest about it.

    Roland F.Port Madison · Sep 2025
  • Cubes had come out hollow and cloudy for most of a year. He timed the fill, measured household pressure, and told me straight that the restriction was on my side of the shut-off. Fair, if not what I hoped.

Before you call

The six questions that come up every week

Do you actually come to the island, or do I ship the unit somewhere?
We come to you. A built-in Sub-Zero is not going anywhere — the diagnostic, the parts and the repair all happen in your kitchen. Our van crosses on the Seattle–Bainbridge run and works the island in a loop, so we are here for the whole day rather than one appointment.
How quickly can someone get out to Rolling Bay or Port Madison?
Calls booked before noon usually get a same-day slot anywhere on the island. The north end takes longer to reach from Winslow, so those addresses tend to be scheduled first thing or straight after lunch rather than at the tail of the day.
The fridge is warm but the freezer is fine. Is that the compressor?
Almost never. On a dual-compressor Sub-Zero the two compartments run on separate sealed systems, so one side failing while the other holds points at the fresh-food evaporator, its fan, or a defrost fault on that circuit. It is a repairable failure and it does not mean the unit is finished.
Will you pull a panel-ready column out of the cabinetry?
Yes, and it goes back in without a mark. Integrated columns, undercounter drawers and panel-ready wine storage all come out on a regular basis here. The custom panel is removed and set aside on a blanket before anything else happens.
What does the visit cost before any parts?
A flat $89 service call covers the trip, the ferry, and a full assessment of the unit — temperatures logged, sealed system checked, controls and defrost circuit tested. If you go ahead with the repair, that $89 comes off the total in full. You get the repair price in writing before anything is opened.
Do you carry parts, or is everything a second visit?
The van stocks the common failure items for the widespread model families — evaporator fans, defrost heaters, thermistors, door gaskets, water inlet valves and the usual control boards. Sealed-system components and model-specific parts are ordered, which is the one case where a second crossing is needed.
